It reframes the BMI's racist and scientifically flawed foundations through pop culture and fad diets. We also kept coming back to Brenda Peynado's fiction. What We Lost is narrated as a community testimony. Townspeople begin to lose body parts, one at a time. It's strange and quietly devastating. Marco Sconocchia's photographs of an unhoused community in Rome offer a different kind of witness.

Who's Berlin Quarterly for?

Berlin Quarterly is one for when you want your reading to resist easy categorisation. Each issue brings together reportage, fiction and poetry without privileging one form over another. The writing is demanding in the best sense. This would suit you if you're drawn to literary journals that take culture seriously across its different forms. It's one to reach for when you have proper time set aside and want to be genuinely absorbed.

Type: Mixed-length, reflective read
Instagram: @berlin_quarterly
