The Simple Things

The Simple Things Issue 126 December

Comfort, calm & cheer

Sending cards. Seeking winter’s magic. Heartfelt gifts & evergreen folklore. Honesty boxes. Popcorn garlands & hot chocolate orange. Homemade candles. Trifle! Goodies from the garden. Leftovers pie. Stories & tipples by the fire.

What does the first day of Christmas look like for you? Maybe it’s spending the afternoon baking on Stir up Sunday. Opening the first day on your Advent Calendar or choosing a tree. For some, it’s unpacking the decorations, every box full of memories. Even grown-up families like to watch a favourite festive film together while others prefer more solitary starts – perhaps reading a Christmas book, carols on the radio or a walk to forage greenery from the woods. It may not truly begin for you until you’re sat, drink in hand, surveying a pile of wrapped presents waiting under the tree.
However, your Yuletide begins, we all have a set-piece of traditions, rituals and customs that we may add to or adjust over the years but they certainly aren’t just about ‘the big day’ (or even 12 days). And it’s only when we embrace this month-long busyness and anticipation, not as a list of chores but as a calendar of memorable moments, that we get the warm glow of giving and receiving, sharing and caring. Happy Christmas from all at The Simple Things.
