UK Indie Magazine Publishers Worth Knowing

  • 2 min read

The UK is home to a rich indie magazine scene, with publishers ranging from single founders working from their kitchen table to small studios producing multiple titles. Here are six publishers to know, all of whose titles you'll find on our shelves.

Delayed Gratification
London

Founded by Rob Orchard, Marcus Webb and Matthew Lee, Delayed Gratification is the slow journalism magazine that revisits the news cycle three months after everyone else has moved on. Published quarterly, it's part of the wider Slow Journalism Company which champions taking time with stories rather than rushing to publish them first.

Ernest Journal
Bristol

Ernest is an independent journal for makers, thinkers and adventurers. Founded and edited by Jo Tinsley, each issue takes a slow, considered look at curious subjects, from mudlarking to natural history to lost languages.

Iceberg Press
Oxted, Surrey

Iceberg Press is the publisher behind The Simple Things and Flourish, an annual wellbeing journal. As a small independent publisher (and our own house, so we might be biased), Iceberg focuses on making magazines that feel like keepsakes.

Lodestars Anthology
London

Lodestars Anthology is edited and published by Liz Schaffer, an Australian based in London. Each issue is dedicated to one country, made in collaboration with photographers and writers who live there or know it well. Published twice a year and known for its stunning matte pages and hand-lettered covers.

Positive News
Devon

Positive News is the pioneer of constructive journalism, a movement that reports on solutions and progress alongside the challenges of the world. Community-owned and quarterly, it offers a genuine alternative to the relentlessly negative news cycle.

TCO London
London

Established in 2004, TCO London is the publisher behind Little White Lies (the beloved film magazine), Huck (DIY culture) and Sandwich Magazine(food and craft). Alongside publishing, TCO also runs a creative agency, but it's their editorial titles that have earned them a place at the forefront of UK indie publishing.
