The Simple Things

The Simple Things Issue 157 July

FRUIT – Giant jam tarts & cricket teas. Printing with petals. How to win at the fete. Golden hour gatherings. Explorer days out. Fan-tastic tales & Deco delights. Slumbering well. Street-side LA plot. Purple emperors. Tomato leaf martinis & rosé-soaked pickles. Why we love a car boot. Fish fritters & sea shanties.

High summer is when good ideas bear fruit - literally in the case of berry bushes and fruit trees – but also in those efforts we made in spring when we planned trips, cleaned our homes and planted gardens. It feels like now we can enjoy the fruits of these labours (and it’s not too late to still make fun things happen), if we remember to take time to note and notice, stop or at least slow down now and again. Good things to eat and drink are in abundance, for cakes, jam, a cricket tea or, nicest of all, snacks and sundowner tipples at a golden hour gathering. Even the weather can’t cramp our style. If it’s hot we can wear sandals and waft a fan or visit an Art Deco lido. If skies are grey, then brighten your table with jugs of flowers, seek out a bargain at a car boot, have a go at printing with petals or simply cheer yourself up with a burst of boisterous sea shanty. July is what we choose to make it, ripe for the picking you might say.
