Pressing Matters Issue 36
Pressing Matters is a quarterly magazine celebrating modern printmaking. Each issue visits artists and studios doing incredible things. Discover about their work, their inspirations and why they do what they do.
What grabbed us about this issue?
An artist that captured our attention in this issue was Martin Grover, whose spooky yet nostalgic prints hint at dark and melancholy narratives despite their bright colours. His work feels very surreal and we found that we kept coming back to these pages to take another look. We also enjoyed the piece 'Seeing the Mountain' which looks at Katsushika Hokusai's famous woodwork prints like 'The Great Wave', part of his series 'Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji'. This is an interesting read that explores the iconic artist's techniques that have been inspiring print makers for hundreds of years.
Who is Pressing Matters for?
For those who enjoy visually stimulating reads, Pressing Matters is a brilliant and unusual collection of art to browse at a slow pace. If you're interested in the more technical side of print making, the writing is detailed and insightful about the artistic process, but remains accessible and welcoming to those who might know nothing about the medium.
It feels like a warm and friendly read and there is a strong sense of community inside too. As well as featuring and celebrating a variety of print artists from all different backgrounds, they also invite their readers to get involved and submit their own work which is showcased at the end of the magazine. So if you want to make a print of your own, this magazine can give you both the inspiration, information and encouragement to get started.
