The Fifth Province

The Fifth Province Issue 1

The Fifth Province is a quarterly magazine from Ireland that brings together art, history, music and literature.

What grabbed us about this issue…

This debut issue looks at the meaning of interiors, both as spaces to make your own and as places that hold private worlds. There’s a holistic approach to this theme, with pieces that spin off in unexpected directions. An excerpt fromThe Yellow Wallpaper, first published in 1892, illustrates the close connection between our physical and mental space. More recently, the Nancy Meyers aesthetic, as seen in films likeFather of the Bride, is celebrated, and it’s easy to see why these spaces are so popular to recreate. In contrast, the bright mix-and-match feel of a bungalow in Charleston, USA reminds us that a home can be a place to express ourselves.

Who's The Fifth Province for?

This is one to take a look at if you enjoy longer reads that offer some different viewpoints and the chance for extra research after you've finished an article. Poetry and artwork sit between the main features, giving you a natural pause along the way. It's a  good choice for a leisurely weekend when you have a bit more time to think about the ideas, especially the articles featuring historical references that are worth spending longer on.
