This bi-monthly, A5-sized magazine edited and illustrated by Oliver Spicer includes essays, interviews with independent directors, infographics, cartoons, and sections dedicated to film history.
What grabbed us about this issue...
Just in time for Halloween, Issue 14 is the horror special and comes with a few extra pages. ‘A New Verdict’ challenges the classification of horror, with Jordan O’Shea making the case for films such asThe Trial belonging to the genre. The film sees Josef K. accused of an unknown crime by an unknown authority, forcing him on a disturbing journey. As everyday environments become places that can’t be escaped, O’Shea highlights the parallels between the film and more traditional horror titles. For a shorter, more visual read, we enjoyed the Halloween data section tracking the release of scary films in October.
Who is The Film Pupilfor?
The film-led topics often move in less expected directions, giving this zine a slightly offbeat feel. It’s one to try if you’re curious about how film connects to wider ideas and culture, whether you follow the industry closely or not.
