The Simple Things

The Simple Things Issue 160 October

HUGCandlelit mornings & chestnut rooibos. Baked pear pies. Sunday bests. It’s a dog walker’s life. Words to make life easier. Bramble baskets. Koromagae clothes swap. Long walks & harvest fruits. Why we love our kitchen tables. Mauritian pickles. Monster hunting. Keeping a commonplace book. Imaginary gardens. Acorn ink & tawny owls. Jumper blankets.

As leaves turn and nights grow longer, we gather loved ones close and enjoy the pleasures of hearth and home. Just the time for cheese, wine and company. There’s a comfort in words – noting them in a journal or commonplace book and reading to fire the imagination. Quiet homespun hobbies like sketching orchard fruit at the kitchen table or a pleasing job like refreshing winter woollies before the first frosts arrive are satisfying October pastimes, before hibernation beckons. It can be a melancholy month for some but a hug now and again can make a difference. Whether you reach for a person, a pet or even a tree, any will ground you and help you feel good. Autumn might feel like a time for looking inwards but warm gestures will be always be appreciated.
