The Simple Things

PRE SALE The Simple Things Issue 172 October

RELISH – At home Oktoberfest. The magic of autumn twilight. Making a felt sauna hat. Analogue music & everyday art. Beetroot Battenberg. Little libraries. Homes for hibernators. Beryl Cook’s art. Fig leaf custard. How to conquer conkers. Tupperware parties & mop fairs. Piles of leaves and finding mushrooms

Autumn seems like the shortest of our seasons; all the more reason then to relish the vibrant colours and the last of the harvests.Make the effort to get outdoors to gather conkers and have fun in nature’s playground while the weather is crisp but not cold – the days might be shorter already but they’re not yet the early dark to come. Twilight, that mysterious time before sunrise and just after sunset, comes into its own this month – admire it from an upstairs window or, even better, take a stroll under painterly skies. We relish hearth and home too – be it art on our walls, favourite mugs in our kitchens or bringing in bright berries and leaves from our gardens. Wildlife is slowing down and preparing for hibernation, our own reminder that taking an analogue moment now and again – the ritual of playing a record or curling up with a book – can restore us like nothing else.  This may be a short season but, for many of us, it is the sweetest of all.

PLEASE NOTE: Copies will be posted from Tuesday 22 September along with other items in the same order.
