The Simple Things

The Simple Things Issue 149 November

JEWEL – Chilli tacos for chilly nights. Gemstone stories. Fig leaf horchata. Why we feel the way we do. Scandi slippers & dip dye candles. How to be a modern grocer. Flatland wonders. Black garlic marmite. Forest gardens at home. Appreciating fog. Bedtime cake & much-loved mugs.

Autumn proper is here. The leaves are turning, seeds are set, there’s a stew on the stove and a smell of woodsmoke in the air. And what a precious thing it is. Just a few short weeks of seasonal traditions to treasure, from All Hallows, through Guy Fawkes Night to Stir-up-Sunday and then the excitement of festivities to come. Jewel colours are everywhere in November; falling ruby red and amber leaves, the diamond sparkle of cheering silvery fairy lights or a hard morning frost, spices that enrich what we eat, while fortifying us for the winter to come and the golden glow of bonfires, wood-burners and firepits.

There’s more treasure indoors, too, in the jars and bottles of a pantry and colourful hats, scarves and gloves ready for crisp autumn outings. This is not a time to break with routine and try something new but instead we can turn to the comforts of nostalgia and forgotten wisdom. So, write your name with a sparkler, cradle hot drinks or tipples in a much-loved mug and appreciate the gems and treats that this rich month offers us.
