The Simple Things

The Simple Things Issue 167 May

LARK - Dawn chorus breakfast. Bloom scrolling. Get-out-there walks. Plant pot projects. Croissant cake & turmeric coffee. Impromptu picnics & spontaneous delights. Churchyard wilding. DIY skittles. How to summerfy your garden. Home-churned butter. Ancient trees. Hot Victorians, cool mods & rad librarians. Plant once veg. Watercress pesto.

The month of May is made for the first impromptu picnic of the year, when trees are in leaf, flowers are flourishing and peak nature is all around us. A dawn start to hear the birdsong offers the chance to enjoy a second breakfast and still have the whole day to play with. Two long weekends this month feels like the start of holiday time, bringing all the opportunities for larking about and mini-adventures that an extra day off allows. If you swap organised fun for magical spontaneity who knows where it will take you?A walk to engage the senses can be as serious or as silly as you make it and a kitchen table project –  be it home-churning butter, DIY skittles or making things from flowerpots – is sure to be fun. Find an ancient tree and imagine what has played out beneath its boughs or spend your downtime seeking out people who delight and inspire. Summerfy your garden, learn to shuffle cards like a pro or go for a paddle. What a lark!
