Encens Issue 53

Published twice a year in Paris, Encens is a large-format glossy magazine that approaches fashion as an art form, exploring designer vision rather than seasonal trends.

What grabbed us about this issue...

Issue 53 opens with 55 archive pages devoted to 1984. Comme des Garçons, Giorgio Armani and Tina Chow in the same deep dive is a generous editorial commitment to a single year. If you’re interested in fashion history, Angelo Flaccavento’s piece on Iceberg is worth finding. The knitwear label that stopped the industry in 1983 rarely gets this kind of attention. We also enjoyed the conversation with Adrian Appiolaza of Moschino. He talks creativity and outsiderism with the kind of candour that extensive interviews earn.

Who’s Encens for?

Encens is one for when you want fashion writing that takes the long view. Each issue approaches the subject through a designer’s eye rather than a trend cycle, giving it a different kind of authority. Published since 2002, the archive sensibility runs deep. You can tell this is a magazine made by people who treat fashion as seriously as any other art form. This would suit you if you’re drawn to fashion history and visual culture rather than seasonal coverage. Think of it as a fashion journal with the feel of a collector’s edition. It’s one to reach for when you want to sit with something properly.
