Alder

Alder 04

Published annually, Alderis an architecture magazine with a focus on rural Scotland and the north of England.

What grabbed us about this issue…

This issue turns its focus to modernist architects working across Shetland, Wester and Easter Ross and the Borders. If you're interested in new build projects, there's a feature on an unconventional build in Cumbria that you might enjoy. There's also a thoughtful look at hemp insulation, a boat building project on Mull and the renovation of a saltwater pool in Morayshire.

Who's Alder for?

Made by a small architecture practice, Alder is one for those interested in builds using recycled, natural and low energy materials. You can tell this is a labour of love, with the magazine celebrating other architects producing modest, context-driven rural projects, alongside the craftspeople, makers and artists doing the work. There's a real sense of care in how it's put together, with photography, drawn details and well researched writing. This would suit you if you're after something to sit with on a quiet afternoon, especially if you're curious about how buildings can respond to the landscape around them.
