The Simple Things Issue 147 September

We often take for granted what’s right under our noses, be it family, friends or our local patch. Yet making the most of where we live gives us a deep connection with our community – and there are hidden gems on every doorstep.Few of us live in renowned beauty spots, instead favourite parts of our patch are as likely to be an unkempt edgeland, a city park or a parade of familiar shops, than a sweeping meadow, pretty cove or chocolate box village. In a nutshell, it’s anywhere we feel at home. But that affinity makes us appreciate it, want to protect it and improve it. Using it is the first step; picking blackberries, nurturing an allotment, joining a local sports club or class or even just walking your dog in the woods. Whatever your patch means to you, by showing it and the people who live there a little respect, we the world in a small way. Back-to- school September is a time for looking ahead, so maybe this is the year we make a pledge to support our patch, who knows what we will learn and discover?
