The Simple Things

The Simple Things Issue 163 January

NEST – Midwinter care and repair. Pecan porridge. Hygge cabins & kitchen nooks. The joy of ice skating. Bergamot jelly. Wassail crowns & citrus printing. Life lessons from David Attenborough. Baklava biscuits. Comfort food and frosty walks. Are you an otravert? Blackboard art. Words for weather. Long views from tall towers. Why we love a bobble hat. Clinkerbells & hellebores.

Who isn’t secretly a little relieved when festive busyness comes to an end and we can take a moment to stop, or at least slow down and embrace dormancy for a while? It’s what midwinter was made for. All you need is a nest from which to enjoy it. Every creature wants to make a nest, a nook or a den; a space they feel safe and secure in and we’re no different. While we may covet a hyggelig cabin in Norway or the Welsh hills, the same comforts can be found at home, too. Maybe it’s a place to curl up to write or read, baking in a steamed-up kitchen, the cocoon of hot water or even an eyrie atop a tall tower, from which to view the world with fresh eyes.

There are plenty of magical sights in January, from the grateful birds at a garden feeder to deer gliding through bare trees, frosted mornings and hellebores flowering against all the odds. If we learn to use them like a springboard into the new year, we’ll be ready to leave the nest come the first glimpse of spring.

Unfortunately we are sold out online, however this issue will be available in the shops from 24 December.
