Published twice a year, Elephant is a contemporary art magazine bringing together illustration, photography, design and pop culture, with a strong commitment to diversity in its commissioning.
What grabbed us about this issue...
Issue 45 puts portraiture at its centre through a conversation between Otis Kwame Kye Quaicoe and Kwesi Botchway. Two painters discussing Black representation and the art market together is a more honest format than the solo profile. We also enjoyed the block printing history. Democratising the arts is the broader thread it connects to and the issue makes that argument without overstating it.
Who’s Elephant for?
Elephant is one for when you want contemporary art coverage with real range. Each issue moves between fine art, illustration, photography and design without treating any one field as secondary. The commissioning is deliberately diverse, which gives each issue a breadth that most art publications don’t manage. This would suit you if you’re drawn to visual art as part of a wider cultural conversation. Think of it as a biannual survey of where contemporary art is heading and who is shaping it. It’s one to reach for when you want to feel genuinely up to date with the field.
