Fields & Stations is a travel magazine of good writing for curious travellers, using small cultural details to tell bigger stories about the places we move through.
What grabbed us about this issue...
Issue 5 opens with a travel manifesto and Meera Dattani’s essay on decolonising travel writing gives the issue its sharpest early moment. Jamie Lafferty on love, light and loss in Antarctica is the longer piece to find. It takes a subject that invites grandeur and does something quieter with it. We also enjoyed Liana Aghajanian on meat and home among Mongolian shamans. Food as a way into an unfamiliar spiritual practice is exactly the kind of small cultural object Fields & Stations uses to tell a bigger story.
Who’s Fields & Stations for?
Fields & Stationsis one for when you want travel writing that earns its observations. Each issue focuses on the small cultural details, a shop, a sandwich, a local ritual, that open up into something larger. The writing is curious rather than aspirational. This would suit you if you find most travel journalism too polished and want something that sits with the difficulty of being somewhere new. Think of it as a literary travel companion rather than a guide. It’s one to reach for when you want to go somewhere in your imagination without leaving the room.
