Foul Playis a crime magazine that keeps well clear of gore and sensationalism, finding instead the cultural, comic and human stories that surround the subject.
What grabbed us about this issue...
Issue 2 introduces its first ever theme, crimes against nature, and the natural history heist feature earns the billing. The story of the greatest theft in natural history and the obsessive search for the culprit is exactly the kind of crime writing Foul Play does well. We also enjoyed the artist who spent a year collecting 8,000 dime bags to highlight his home city’s drug problem. It’s a more considered response to a familiar urban reality than most crime coverage manages.
Who’s Foul Play for?
Foul Play is one for when you want crime writing without the crime scene photographs. Each issue is structured in three acts, moving from lighter fare through long-form features and into cultural recommendations. You can tell the editorial restraint is a deliberate choice rather than a limitation. This would suit you if you’re drawn to crime as a cultural and social subject rather than a genre. Think of it as a literary magazine that uses crime as its lens. It’s one to reach for when you want to feel illuminated rather than unsettled by what you’re reading.
