Fare Issue 09: Kampala

Published biannually, each issue of Farebrings a different city to life by exploring its culture through food, history and community.

What grabbed us about this issue…

Issue 09 takes Kampala and gives it the full Fare treatment. The conversation with George the Poet is the place to start. A Londoner from a Ugandan household talking about his connection to the city gives the issue a personal register that opens everything else up. We also enjoyed the feature on the Congolese community of expats and refugees. Their influence on and experience of Kampala is a thread most city guides wouldn’t think to pull. The history of South-East Asian and Indian influences on Ugandan food rounds things out with the kind of culinary origin story Fare does particularly well.

Who’s Fare for?

Fareis one for travellers who like to experience a city like a local. It feels more like an immersive travel experience than a magazine. Each issue features the work of local writers, photographers and illustrators to capture the sights, sounds, smells and creative spirit of each city. Printed on high-quality paper, it’s a great size to fit in your luggage. So whether you use it as a pocket-guide or inspiration, it’s worth keeping handy when you want to visit somewhere new.
