Fields & Stations

Fields & Stations Issue 6

Fields & Stations is a travel magazine of good writing for curious travellers, using small cultural details to tell bigger stories about the places we move through.

What grabbed us about this issue...

Issue 6 asks whether travel can happen without going anywhere and builds a convincing case. Audrey Gillan resettling on a Portuguese barrier island gives the theme its most committed expression. We enjoyed Jorge Pedro Uribe Llamas training his cultural microscope on his local metro station alongside it. The mundane as a worthy subject for travel writing is harder to pull off than it sounds and he earns it. Mike Sowden crossing Orkney on foot rounds things out with the most elemental version of the issue’s argument.

Who’s Fields & Stations for?

Fields & Stationsis one for when you want travel writing that earns its observations. Each issue focuses on the small cultural details, a shop, a sandwich, a local ritual, that open up into something larger. The writing is curious rather than aspirational. This would suit you if you find most travel journalism too polished and want something that sits with the difficulty of being somewhere new. Think of it as a literary travel companion rather than a guide. It’s one to reach for when you want to go somewhere in your imagination without leaving the room.
