Detail: '66 Special

Published quarterly, Detail is a UK-based magazine dedicated to Mod culture, music, fashion, design and contemporary modernist style.

What grabbed us about this issue…

This is the '66 Special, celebrating an unforgettable year of sound, style, stars and (of course) sport. There's a mix of regular Detail names and top football writers including: Mark Webster, Tim Vickery and Mark Baxter. We kept coming back to a piece following the iconic Umbro kit design that saw England win the World Cup. If you want to re-live the historic victory, there's a bright comic strip that you might enjoy.

Who's Detailfor?

Detail is one for when you want to go deeper into Mod culture and the scenes that grew out of it. Think of it as part music journal, part cultural archive: interviews with musicians, DJs and designers sit alongside essays on menswear, cinema and British subcultural history. You can tell it has been carefully considered, with clean layouts and photography that reflect the modernist aesthetic the magazine champions. This would suit you if you already have some familiarity with the subject, as it does not spend much time on introductions. It is one to settle into on a quiet afternoon when you want something that rewards a bit of attention.
