The Simple Things

The Simple Things Issue 148 October

WEAVE – Savoury scones & spiced biscuits. Mending woollies. Autumn outings & colourful soups. Domestic goddesses. Apple & ginger fizz. Saving daylight. Pear & cheese toasties. Marvellous nights for moon walks. Red-leaf hunting. Why we love parkrun. How to stock a pantry. Fedges, mandrakes & fine swine.

It seems odd to think of the tenth month of the year as the start of things. But in older times, when the harvest was safely gathered and the growing season almost done, October is when people spent more time by the fire and began to make plans for the year ahead. This pastime has no less appeal now, it’s a good time to weave fresh ideas into your life; try keeping the clocks on summertime to save the daylight, maybe do a first parkrun, switch off (and on again) thanks to a silent retreat. Tempting though a cosy autumn afternoon tea at home may be, the colours of this short but sweet season draw us outside to explore the fabric of town and country on crisp days and clear moonlit nights. Then we can come home to hot soup and the satisfying task of mending woollies, sorting a storecupboard or making something proudly homemade. It doesn’t take much to remember you are an (occasional) domestic goddess.
