The Simple Things Issue 156 June

SOAR – Just picked salads & rose petal cream. Why we love radio. Sunny-day butterflies & starry night moths. How to snorkel. Make it a could-do week. Fairy story foxgloves. Scrappy-do projects & learning to skip. Garden hideaways. Gold panning. Finding your voice. Lavender lemonade & almond pressé. Flower field picnics. Beavers are back!

One month in the calendar needs no introduction, no reminder of why we should appreciate it or learn to love it. June is an easy sell with its long, light-filled days and slow painterly dusks, the flower-filled meadows, acrobatic swallows and the promise of picnics, swimming and festivals. While no month is all a bed of roses (though June does its petal-strewn best) the magic of midsummer often sees our spirits soar. And there seems to be more time for the things we love; whether it is sport or yoga, eating or enjoying the radio – taking it outside only adds to the pleasure. It’s worth making room in our hearts for moments of wonder too; noticing moths flutter in the long twilight, butterflies hovering in bright sunshine, foxgloves straight from a fairy story and the quiet calm when we take a peek underwater. The only pitfall in these first days of summer is excitedly packing our diary with busyness when surely the thing to do to fully appreciate June is, simply, less.
