Published annually, Asia is a Paris-based photography magazine exploring the continent's landscapes and cultures through photographers who live there and those passing through.
What grabbed us about this issue...
Alec Soth's unpublished Japan series is the draw. The work is typically still and unhurried, and seeing previously unseen material in a debut issue is a good sign. Martin Parr's contribution sits interestingly alongside it. Where Soth tends to linger, Parr observes at a slight remove. We also kept coming back to Sarker Protick. His work has a quiet intimacy that holds its own against the better-known names.
Who's Asia for?
Asia is one for when you want to look rather than read. Printed on thick, glossy paper, it has the feel of a photography book rather than a periodical. The annual format gives each issue the weight of something made to last. You can tell the editorial selection is considered. Established names like Soth and Parr sit alongside emerging photographers from within the region. This would suit you if you're drawn to documentary photography and Asia's cultural complexity as a subject. Think of it as a visual document rather than a survey. It's one to reach for when you want to spend time with images rather than move through them quickly.
