Wobby Volume 11 no.42

Wobby is a biannual visual arts magazine from the Netherlands, bringing together illustration, literature and comics. It has a colourful, independent feel, with work that often leans towards the more playful and experimental.

What grabbed us about this issue....

Folklores and legends are revisited here, with traditional myths reworked through a more contemporary lens, touching on themes of queer identity and the patriarchy. Yes Sang is one of the longer pieces, following a Malaysian family as they come together from different parts of the UK to share a traditional meal. It reflects on the pace of cultural change, while holding onto a sense of heritage.

Who is Wobby for?

This would suit you if you enjoy graphic art and thoughtful storytelling, where ideas unfold visually rather than through long passages of text. The risograph printing gives each page a distinctive, slightly handmade feel, with layered colours and textures. You don’t need any background in illustration to get into it, it’s something you can dip into, moving between shorter pieces in no particular order.
