New Philosopher

New Philosopher Issue 48

Published quarterly,New Philosopherexplores philosophical ideas from past and present thinkers on ways to live a happier, more fulfilling life.

What grabbed us about this issue…

Issue 48 explores emotion, and whether our feelings get in the way of good thinking or are essential to it. We kept coming back to the way the issue sets philosophers against each other, with David Hume arguing that reason should serve our passions and Immanuel Kant remaining wary of emotions altogether. If you’re curious about the science behind it, you might enjoy the work of neuroscientist Antonio Damasio, who argues that without emotion our reasoning becomes strangely detached.

Who's New Philosopher for?

Don't be put off by the title - New Philosopheris good for those new to philosophy as well as the more experienced. You can see the thinking that goes into each issue, with longer interviews sitting alongside shorter reads and visual infographics. The layout gives you room to breathe between each piece, so you can dip in and cherry-pick based on your interests. It's one to savour on a quiet afternoon, when you have the time to think a little more.
