New Philosopher

New Philosopher Issue 49

Published quarterly,New Philosopherexplores philosophical ideas from past and present thinkers on ways to live a happier, more fulfilling life.

What grabbed us about this issue…

Issue 49 explores the theme of observation, asking what we really notice and what slips right past us. We kept coming back to an interview with psychologist Daniel Simons about his famous ‘Invisible Gorilla’ experiment, which shows just how much we can miss when our attention is elsewhere. If you’re into art, you might enjoy a piece on French artist Sophie Calle, whose conceptual work plays with ideas of watching and being watched. There’s also a look at the sociology of photography that’s worth a look if you’ve ever wondered how a camera shapes the way we see.

Who's New Philosopher for?

Don't be put off by the title - New Philosopheris good for those new to philosophy as well as the more experienced. You can see the thinking that goes into each issue, with longer interviews sitting alongside shorter reads and visual infographics. The layout gives you room to breathe between each piece, so you can dip in and cherry-pick based on your interests. It's one to savour on a quiet afternoon, when you have the time to think a little more.
