Disegno

Design Reviewed #1

Design Reviewed is a collection of essays from Disegno examining design as experienced by the people who actually use it.

What grabbed us about this issue...

Issue 1 takes ten areas of daily life and asks what design is actually doing to us inside each one. Amelia Abraham’s Poppers on Main is the unexpected standout. Using a subculture’s crossover into the mainstream as a design story is exactly the kind of lateral thinking this publication exists for. Helen Gonzalez Brown’s opening essay on technology and connection as medicine sets the tone well. It reframes a familiar anxiety with more precision than most.

Who’s Design Reviewed for?

Design Reviewed is one for when you want design writing that starts with experience rather than aesthetics. Each essay takes a different category, from policy and ecology to interface and phenomenon, and works outward from how it actually feels to be a user. You can tell this comes from Disegno’s stable. The writing is rigorous without being academic. This would suit you if you already think critically about the designed world and want writing that keeps pace with that. Think of it as a user review of everything around us. It’s one to reach for when you want to look at the ordinary with a sharper eye.
