New Humanist

New Humanist Spring 2025

First published in 1885, New Humanist is a quarterly magazine of ideas, science and culture.

What grabbed us about this issue…

This Spring 2025 issue takes a close look at politics and democracy, and what we really want from the people who lead us. We kept coming back to James Ball’s piece on the age-old tug between idealism and pragmatism, and how it’s playing out in British politics today. If you enjoy a thoughtful conversation, you might like hearing from Stephen Fry on doubt and why it’s hard to be a woolly liberal. For something lighter, there’s Martin Cohen on the growing evidence that animals enjoy a good laugh, which is worth a look if you need a break from the headlines.

Who's New Humanist for?

New Humanistis one for when you're seeking a bit more connection to the world around you. Think of it as a way to stay across the latest ideas in science, politics and culture, with articles that don't assume much prior knowledge. It's one to reach for when you have a bit of time to yourself - the crossword at the back is worth saving room for too!
