New Philosopher

New Philosopher 34 Truth

Published quarterly,New Philosopherexplores philosophical ideas from past and present thinkers on ways to live a happier, more fulfilling life.

What grabbed us about this issue…

This issue tackles the tricky subject of truth, asking whether we can handle it and how far we can trust our own minds. We kept coming back to a piece on how to beat a polygraph, which raises some intriguing questions about whether lie detectors can really be trusted. If you’re curious about technology, you might enjoy the look at deepfakes and how they’re blurring the line between real and fake. There’s also wisdom from Michel de Montaigne that’s worth a look if you enjoy timeless thinking on honesty.

Who's New Philosopher for?

Don't be put off by the title - New Philosopheris good for those new to philosophy as well as the more experienced. You can see the thinking that goes into each issue, with longer interviews sitting alongside shorter reads and visual infographics. The layout gives you room to breathe between each piece, so you can dip in and cherry-pick based on your interests. It's one to savour on a quiet afternoon, when you have the time to think a little more.
