Gutter

Gutter No. 30

Published twice a year, Gutter is an award-winning printed journal for exceptional new writing from contributors living in Scotland and around the world.

What grabbed us about this issue…

Issue 30 opens with essays from Sara Baume and Helen Mort and we enjoyed how two such distinct voices set the tone for the issue’s range. If you’re drawn to poetry that takes its time, Hollie McNish’s contribution is worth seeking out alongside Jen Hadfield’s interview. The two together give the issue a strong poetic thread. We also kept coming back to the book reviews focusing on Jackie Kay and Kapka Kassabova. Two writers who resist easy categorisation deserve exactly this kind of critical attention.

Who’s Gutter for?

Gutteris to reach for when you’re looking for a mix of traditional literary fiction, genre fiction, poetry, and personal essays in one sitting. It’s proudly Scottish, with diverse content and contributors. Not all pieces are conventional, it would suit you if you like to step out of your comfort zone and delve into the unexpected.
