What grabbed us about this issue...
Volume 3 is titled Above the Alps and charts the evolution of Alitalia and Swissair through vintage maps dating back to 1948. Both airlines are now gone, which gives the archive material a particular weight. The essay on airport spectator balconies is worth seeking out. A generation of plane spotters spent their weekends on them and this is a quiet act of remembrance. The piece on all the airports Pope John Paul II blessed is the kind of detail only Direction of Travel would think to pursue.
