Disegno

Disegno #35

Published quarterly, Disegno is an independent magazine dedicated to in-depth reporting on architecture, design and fashion.

What grabbed us about this issue...

Issue 35 opens with a history of replication from the Gutenberg Press to the smartphone. We enjoyed the ambition of that framing. It sets up the issue’s broader argument without telegraphing it. If you’re interested in design as a social force, Stephen Burks on what the industry gets wrong is the interview to find. He’s an articulate critic from inside the discipline. We also kept coming back to ProxyAddress, which is working to change the systems around homelessness through design. Citibin’s war against New York’s rats is worth a look too. It sounds absurd until you read it.

Who’s Disegno for?

Disegno is one for when you want design writing that treats the subject as a political and cultural force. Each issue moves between architecture, fashion and design without privileging one field over another. The writing is long-form and independent. This would suit you if you’re already engaged with design culture and want criticism that keeps pace with that thinking. Think of it as a quarterly journal of design ideas rather than a showcase. It’s one to reach for when you want to feel properly inside the debate.
